Body Fit Blackpool Dance Fit

Hannah aged 27, is a qualified dance teacher from Blackpool. She started volunteering at Blackpool Women’s Centre in October 2015 after researching local volunteering opportunities. Hannah says she pursued the volunteer post as she ‘really wanted to make a difference to the people within her local community’

Whilst volunteering, Hannah was notified of a Bodyfit leader vacancy, which would require taking responsible for the delivery of regular physical activity sessions to women registered at the Centre. Hannah says “this vacancy seemed ideal as I am qualified dance instructor and am used to delivering dance and physical activity sessions to all ages”. After displaying an expression of interest and completing the application process with Blackpool Women’s Centre and Active Lancashire; Hannah started delivering Dance Fit sessions at the Health Reform Club, Blackpool in February 2016.

Initially, it was important to select a venue that was in close proximity to the Women’s Centre “we chose a venue that is only 5 minutes’ walk from the Centre which has made it easy for the ladies to get to as many don’t have their own transport”

The sessions have attracted a wide range of ladies aged from 25 to 75 years and as a result it has been vital for Hannah to tailor sessions to meet the needs are ability levels. “To make the sessions more enjoyable and so that everyone can join in I have incorporated dance with gentle exercises to warm up and warm down which the ladies seem to enjoy”

Margaret is 75 years old and attends each week, she enjoys all aspects of the sessions which help her keep active and feel less isolated. “I have been coming to the sessions since the start, I love the activity, having a chat and it really helps fill my days as I don’t go out at night time”

When talking about her experience of the Bodyfit programme Hannah says “I would recommend this to anyone, it has been really rewarding seeing the progress made by the ladies, not only with dance but also gaining confidence in themselves as many find it difficult to just get out of the house. It’s a really positive thing to be involved in”

Sessions currently take place Monday 13.00 – 14.00 at Health Reform Club Blackpool, FY1 3ER
