Blackpool Football Club and Community Trust to commemorate former players who fell during WWI

George Elmore, Arthur Evans, William Fiske, Benjamin Green, and Fred Griffiths, were players who represented Blackpool FC, who sadly, along with thousands of other young men, all fell during WWI.

To mark the centenary of the end of WW1 Blackpool Football Club and Blackpool FC Community Trust are planning to commemorate their sacrifice by planting five trees; one for each player, at a special service within the Fylde Memorial Arboretum and Community Woodland, Moor Park Avenue, Blackpool, FY2 0LZ on Thursday 8th November at 3.30pm.

First team manager, Terry McPhillips; Blackpool FC Community Trust Chief Executive, Ashley Hackett and Arboretum Manager, Paul Binns will be among those representing the Club, Trust, and Arboretum.

Head of Sport, Jason White, said: “We’ve had great support from the Royal British Legion this past year and with the significance of this date, we always wanted to mark the centenary with something special.”

Arboretum Manager, Paul Binns, explains that “We have created a dedicated space for memorials to footballers and staff of Blackpool FC who fell during conflict, and will work with the club and Community Trust to support this in the future.”

“We will be doing all we can to raise the profile of the garden and we will be looking to recruit volunteers to maintain them.’’ said Ashley Hackett, Chief Executive of the Community Trust.

Blackpool FC Chairwomen, Natalie Christopher, will also unveil a recently commissioned plaque that will commemorate the employees and supporters of Blackpool Football Club who gave their lives in service of their country. This will take place at midday before the Bristol Rovers game, which will be the Armistice Day fixture for the Football Club. 100 Veterans will also be invited to attend the game as guests.

The Community Trust will also be running two Armed Forces themed stadium tours during the week leading up to Armistice Day. These tours will take place on Monday, November 5th, from 11am until 12.30pm and Thursday, November 8th, from 1pm to 2.30pm.
